Gosselin's lawyer, Mark Jay Heller, filed paperwork in Montgomery County court in Norristown, Pa., to delay the divorce by as much as three months.
The next hearing in the case had been set for October 15, when the divorce was expected to be completed.
Now, Jon Gosselin is telling the press he wants the three-month wait to improve his relationship with Kate Gosselin, to benefit his children.
"I regret my conduct since Kate and I separated, I used poor judgment in publicly socializing with other women so soon," Jon told In Touch Weekly. "[The delay will] enable Kate and me to restore our relationship as cooperative parents and to open up our lines of communication. I hope that she will be as receptive and enthusiastic as I am to do what is best for our family."
Radar Online said Gosselin told his wife of the decision via an express-mail package.

The renamed "Kate Plus Eight" begins Nov. 2. It will continue to focus on the Gosselin kids but with more focus on Kate Gosselin's role as a single mother.
TLC says Jon Gosselin will continue to appear on the show, but less often.
