New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie has taken away a $420,000 tax credit awarded to the producers of the hit MTV show "Jersey Shore."
In a veto letter to the Economic Development Authority, Christie objected to an expansion of the New Jersey Film Tax Credit Transfer Program - and to the content of "Jersey Shore."
“We must ensure that our limited taxpayer dollars are spent on programs and projects that best benefit the State of New Jersey,” Christie said. “I have no interest in policing the content of such projects; however, as Chief Executive I am duty-bound to ensure that taxpayers are not footing a $420,000 bill for a project which does nothing more than perpetuate misconceptions about the State and its citizens.”
Christie and other politicians have objected to what they believe are New Jersey "stereotypes" of people who love to party, work out, tan and do laundry.
He also criticized supporters of an expansion of the tax-credit program.
“For such legislators to now complain of its implementation with respect to Jersey Shore is, at best, mystifying.”
It's unknown if MTV will move the show to another state, where it can get tax benefits.
