Cyrus, 16, won six awards but will get more attention for a musical number that featured her dancing and sometimes crouching in short shorts while grabbing a pole mounted on an ice cream truck.
Cyrus and her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, have been rumored for months to be looking to expand the young singer’s career to a wider audience.
Cyrus also presented an award to singer Britney Spears and talked about how much she liked Spears.
Also at the awards was former boxer Mike Tyson, who appeared in a skit with the Jonas Brothers.
"Twilight" dominated Sunday's ceremony with 11 wins, including choice movie drama, romance, liplock, rumble and soundtrack.
Kristen Stewart won the movie drama actress category while Robert Pattinson picked up two surfboard-shaped trophies - one for movie drama actor, another for male hottie.
Aside from Miley’s psedo-stripper number, the other big shock of the night came from comedian Kathy Griffin.
Griffin showed up with a mystery date who was Levi Johnston, the ex-boyfriend of Bristol Palin.
