The Camden City Garden Club has just won a national award for its program.
Fox 29's Sue Serio visited a community garden at St. Anthony's Church in Camden Wednesday.
Jeff Clarke explained gardens in Camden are actually providing food for area residents. Clark said Camden is a "food desert." That means "there is not adequate fresh healthy food available to the population. Because we have so few grocery stores and we have a population of 80,000 people."
There are 30 gardens growing at churches throughout Camden.
A new study by the University of Pennsylvania found that over the last two years Camden residents have expanded community gardening faster than most cities in the U.S.
The Camden City Garden Club won a national award for its programs called The Garden Crusader Award. Camden is the smallest city to ever receive the award.
