Soda Tax Proposal Bubbles Up In Philly

Should You Have To Pay Extra For Soda?

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia leaders are trying to get some juice into their fizzling tax base.

The city's looking into taxing soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks.

That would be one alternative to raising wage or real estate taxes, but it's not so popular.

Soda drinker Grace Foley said, "I thought 12 cents, an extra 12 cents on a can of soda is a lot of money, absolutely. And, you know what? I'm a soda drinker."

Councilman Darrell Clarke said it would be considered a "health tax" but admits it's a tough sell. He said talks are very preliminary. There's no proposed tax amount.
