LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - Dozens of Rider University students are in the hospital following a suspected norovirus outbreak.
Forty students went to the hospital Wednesday night with symptoms of a gastro-intestinal illness.
Authorities suspect the cause of the illness is the norovirus, which causes diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and stomach cramping. Those symptoms usually last up to three days.
The university says some students have already been discharged from the hospital and are now back on campus.
The school says they are taking steps to prevent further spread of the virus by cleaning all residence halls and public areas.
Rider officials believe it's tied to a possible outbreak of norovirus at nearby Princeton University, where about 90 students have suffered similar symptoms since the beginning of the month.
No classes are canceled and students are encouraged to wash their hands frequently.
FOX 29's Steve Keeley is on his way there and will have a live report coming up.
