The free rides are back for some union workers at the Delaware River Port Authority after DRPA officials decided not to appeal an arbitrator’s ruling that reinstated the controversial perks.
The DRPA got rid of the free rides last August after a public outcry on freebies for union and non union workers. Several unions had appealed that decision saying the free rides were part of their negotiated contract.
DRPA lawyers and high ranking officials decided on Wednesday they probably did not have a legal leg to stand on to challenge the ruling.
The arbitrator not only restored the free rides, he also ordered the DRPA to reimburse the 500 union members for their costs of commuting across the bridge and on PATCO for the time period when the perk was taken away.
