School Peanut Allergy Rules Protested

A school in Florida took extraordinary measures to protect one child suffering from a peanut allergy.

But critics say they're going way too far.

The elementary school made headlines this week when administrators implemented the major changes to accommodate one student who suffers from a severe peanut allergy.

The changes included:

  • Students must now wash their hands and rinse out their mouths before they can walk into their classroom.
  • Desks must be regularly wiped down with Clorox wipes.
  • All peanut products have been banned.
  • Snacks are no longer allowed in class.
  • Even outside food is no longer permitted for holiday parties.

The child's father says he just wants his daughter to be safe at school.

So what's a parent to do?

Kelly Williams, author and founder of SingleMamahood.com, and Dr. Richard Wachs, an allergist and pediatrician, joined the Fox 29 News at 10 Sunday night to discuss whether the protective measures for one child are preventing their kids for getting a complete educational experience.

On Monday, Fox 29's Jennaphr Frederick, who also has experience with food allergies, discussed the issue with Mike Jerrick and Sheinelle Jones on "Good Day."
