CBP Head Visits Philadelphia Airport After FOX 29 Report

Customs Workers Appeared To Be Sleeping On The Job

PHILADELPHIA - Fox 29 Investigates is getting results after our cameras caught what appeared to be U.S. Customs and Border Protection workers sleeping on the job at Philadelphia International Airport.

As Jeff Cole reports, the internal investigation is heating up.

The Fox 29 investigation raised questions about whether customs officers were tucking in their vehicles alongside dumpsters on the north end of Philly International and nodding off.

One source said he's seen it.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection launched an investigation.

Now, our report and the ongoing probe have caught the attention of the very top official at agency.

FOX 29 has learned Commissioner Alan Bersin met with U.S. customs workers at the airport on Tuesday.

A spokesperson says while Bersin was here to "lay out his vision" for the future of the agency, he did speak about the investigation with the port director and two assistant port directors.

The spokesperson adds Bersin also told officers they need to "focus on being professional in our work."

On one day, FOX 29 Investigates watched a customs Dodge Charger sit next to the dumpsters for nearly three hours while an SUV, which pulled up alongside, stayed for an hour and 40 minutes.

Our source says there was little work going on.

So here's where it stands: customs' internal affairs is investigating.

U.S. Rep. Pat Meehan has urged the agency to get to the bottom of what we saw. And now the head of customs appears at the airport to tell his people to be professional, Cole reported.
