Navy Yard Complex Gets 2,300 Jobs

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter is expected to announce plans for two major local employers to add 2,300 jobs to the city's Navy Yard complex.

GlaxoSmithKline will move its headquarters to the site of the former military facility in South Philadelphia now owned by the city.

That will keep a reported 1,300 jobs in the city limits.

Urban Outfitters will also reportedly hire 1,000 new people at the Navy Yard as it greatly increases its facility size there.

The hiring news is another big boost for the mammoth facility, which was also touted by President Obama last week.

In recent months, the Navy Yard facility took some PR hits.

Shipmaker Aker said it would leave the Navy Yard if it didn't get $42 million in taxpayer money to stay there.

Former Gov. Ed Rendell signed off on the financing, but it still would need to be approved by Gov. Tom Corbett.

And the highest-profile business at the Yard, financially troubled Tasty Baking, is seeking a new owner and subsisting on government funding as it fights cash-flow issues and growing commodity costs.

Tasty Baking received more than $30 million in taxpayer funding to move to the Navy Yard from Hunting Park.
