PHILADELPHIA - Fox 29 has the details on Philadelphia Michael Nutter’s proposed tax on drinks with sugar and which of your favorites are affected.
Here is the exact wording of the proposal:
“A sugar-sweetened beverage is any non-alcoholic beverage with added sugar, including: soda, non100%-fruit drinks, sports drinks, flavored water, energy drinks, and ready-to-drink sweetened tea and coffee.”
“The City proposes a two-cent per ounce tax on sugar-sweetened beverages to be levied on Philadelphia retailers based on their annual volume of SSB sales. (In the case of syrup used to produce fountain drinks, the tax will be approximately eighteen cents per ounce, accounting for the fact that 1 ounce of syrup generally produces 9 ounces of beverage.)”
