Philly Beer Week Taps Off Festivities

PHILADELPHIA - A ceremonial mallet dubbed the "Hammer of Glory" was used by Mayor Michael Nutter Friday to open the first keg for the second-annual Philly Beer Week.

Before the mayor had his turn with the mallet opening a keg of Philadelphia-brewed Yards ESA on Friday night, it was carried Olympic-torch-style through various Philadelphia neighborhoods.

The ceremony before a sold-out crowed was held in the lobby of the Comcast Center, the city's newest skyscraper. It features more than 30 regional breweries.

But beer lovers who missed it can take heart: Hundreds of other events are planned through March 15 at more than 100 venues in Philadelphia and nearby areas.
