20-Inch Water Main Breaks In Kensington

PHILADELPHIA - A 20-inch water main break late Friday afternoon flooded basements and businesses in Philadelphia's Kensington neighborhood.

The break sent water gushing up through the pavement on Allegheny Avenue and appeared to have taken out a portion of the roadway.

The water department was at the scene and managed to get the water to stop flowing by 6:25 p.m., but much of the water had already flooded homes and workplaces near Emerald and Jasper streets.

Allegheny Avenue remained shut down as crews worked at the scene. The water department said it wasn't immediately clear what caused the break.
