Stray Bullet Strikes 4-Year-Old Boy

Police Looking For Suspects

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police are looking for the person who shot a 4-year-old boy and a family friend in broad daylight in the city's Logan section.

It happened at 1216 W. Rockland Street Saturday afternoon. A family member, who wishes to remain anonymous, recalled the terrifying scene.

"We heard a gunshot, then we panicked then we ran all inside. I saw blood on his feet right? So I just stayed inside until it was kind of safe."

She ran outside to get the little boy after he was shot. The girl says a 42-year-old friend of the family was sitting on these steps playing with the 4-year-old when it happened. Police say three suspects tried to rob the man.

"They tried to rob him point of gun, of his gold chain. The victim resisted, fought back," says Chief Inspector Scott Small.

Police say that's when one of three suspects, shot the man. They say the bullet went through his thigh and into the toddler's foot.

"On the scene we have the fired cartridge casings as well as three pieces of the gold chain so they didn't steal the chain as intended," says Small.

Family members of the toddler wonder who could be so heartless to open fire on their close friend as he held a 4-year-old in his arms. "Very shocking, and I was really scared, scared, scared."

The young boy was released from the hospital. The man was in stable condition Saturday night.

Police found a mini-van at 13th Street and Wingohocking Street. They believe it is the getaway van and the suspects ditched it.

No arrests have been made.
