PHILADELPHIA - An 11-year-old girl who was raped while on her way to school was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon.
The victim underwent surgery at St. Christopher's Hospital following the vicious assault.
26-year-old Jose Carrasquillo, who was sought for questioning in the case, remains hospitalized in stable condition after several angry neighbors beat him Tuesday. Neighbors recognized him from a police photo.
The girl had just dropped off her younger sister at day care and was walking to school Monday in the city's Kensington section when a man approached her, investigators said.
He started to walk with her, threatened her and said he had a gun. He took her to a nearby backyard and raped her repeatedly, authorities said.
Police called Carrasquillo a "person of interest" in the case, but have not charged him.
