PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia authorities have filed charges against a man apprehended by an angry mob after the brutal rape of an 11-year-old girl.
Police announced the charges against 26-year-old Jose Carrasquillo on Wednesday. He's also being charged in an indecent assault on a 16-year-old the same day.
Capt. John Darby, of the Special Victims Unit, says Carrasquillo faces 19 charges, including rape, aggravated assault and indecent assault.
The 11-year-old had just dropped off a sibling at day care and was walking to school in the city's Kensington section on June 1. Police say Carrasquillo threatened her and took her to a nearby backyard, where he raped her repeatedly.
Tuesday, investigators said DNA matched Carrasquillo to the attack.
Carrasquillo was hospitalized for two days with head injuries suffered when the mob beat him. Police say he hasn't obtained an attorney.
