Taxi Crash Near Kimmel Center Injures 4

2 People Listed In Critical Condition After Crash

Four people were injured, two of them critically, when an accident caused a taxi cab to jump a curb and strike pedestrians in front of the Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.

It happened at the corner of Broad and Spruce Streets at 10:04 p.m. Wednesday, and police said it all started when a red car headed southbound on Broad tried to change lanes.

That car struck the cab, which hit a light post right in front of the Kimmel Center and then kept going, hitting 39-year-old bicyclist Maria Seferina and 58-year-old Alfred Haubert on the street.

Those two individuals are listed in critical condition, one at Hahnemann University Hospital and the other is at Jefferson University Hospital.

Haubert had to have his leg amputated, even as doctors tried to save the other.

The cabbie, 32-year-old Johnson Adelakon, and a passenger were also thrown from the taxi.

Adelakon is in serious condition and his passenger is in good condition.

Investigators say it looks like the cabbie had no choice but to take evasive action. The driver of the other car apparently didn't see him in the blind spot.

Police say the investigation will take months, but so far no one has been charged.
