Man Wins $16.2M Settlement After Losing Legs

A man who lost both his legs in an accident at an Easton, Pa. landfill is now a millionaire after a three-year battle for justice.

The man says he decided to sue his employer because he felt someone should've helped him. He's sharing his story and recalls the very moment he could no longer feel his legs.

It’s been a long battle for Scott Skirpan after his life changed in an instant.

A former Marine, Scott went from being a doting dad who played with his kids and went on vacations with his wife to a man struggling just to get around.

"Next thing I know, all of a sudden, he comes backing up at me. And before I could say anything, it was like 'Boom!'" recalls Skirpan.

Scott had been working in the Chrin Sanitary Landfill in Easton in June of 2006 when he was run over by a bulldozer that crushed both of his legs.

"It drug me under the tracks," says Skirpan.

With his legs all but severed - bone, muscle, and blood vessels destroyed - Scott stayed conscious to place a 911call because he says company workers stood by and watched and no one helped.

After the ordeal, Scott then enlisted the help of two lawyers who in turn helped him seek justice.

"We knew we were right and we knew that they were wrong and kinda hope that things work out the right way, sometimes they do, and I think in this case they did," says Paul Lauricella of The Beasley Firm.

Scott won his battle and was awarded $16.2 million dollars. But he says, the money won't bring back his ability to ever walk again.

"One chapter is closed, I think so, and another one opens," says Skirpan.

Meanwhile, Fox 29 tried calling the landfill company but got no answer.

As for Scott, he plans on buying a new home for his family and a dress he says his wife has been wanting for a long time.
