Teen, Woman Drown In Wildwood

Police identified an adult who drowned in strong ocean currents off the coast of North Wildwood, N.J. Tuesday as a South Carolina woman.

27-year-old Jamilah Watkins and a 15-year-old girl from Middletown, Conn., died while swimming after lifeguards went off duty for the evening.

The Coast Guard was able to rescue a second child nearby who survived.

Officials suspect strong rip currents -- fast-moving belts of water that can pull weak swimmers away from shore -- were to blame.

The victims were in the water just south of the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse when they drowned.

Beach patrol, the Coast Guard, North Wildwood Police, and State Police joined the search and rescue effort.
