PHILADELPHIA - Federal prosecutors have asked the Justice Department to OK an appeal of the sentence given to long-powerful Philadelphia Democrat Vincent Fumo.
A federal judge sparked a public outcry last month when he sentenced the veteran state senator to 4-1/2 years in prison, a fraction of the federal guidelines. Prosecutors had sought 15 years in the corruption case.
The 66-year-old Fumo was convicted of defrauding the Pennsylvania senate and two nonprofits of more than $2 million.
He is due to report to prison Aug. 31, the same day co-defendant Ruth Arnao is slated to start a 1-year term.
Fumo lawyer Dennis Cogan says Fumo will appeal his 137-count conviction only if the government appeals the sentence.
Prosecutors also hope to appeal Arnao's sentence.
