Organizers of the Philly Naked Bike Ride say Sunday's event was intended to bring attention to bicyclists and raise awareness about fuel consumption.
As "Bare As You Dare" is the motto of the World Naked Bike Ride, many participants biked in the buff while others wore bodypaint and skimpy underwear.
"I'm from Chicago. I came here for the naked bike ride....not the Liberty Bell," said rider Daniel Villareal.
Some seemed skeptical about the whole idea of trumpeting a cause so loudly.
"I saw two guys who only had their underwear on. I'm like, 'What the heck is going on?' I was like, 'Did I see that?' That's very inappropriate,'" said one man.
"I'll keep my clothing on and ride my bike. I'll recycle. I feel good about that," said another.
Rougly 2600 people registered for the event online although the actual turnout was lower. No arrests were made.
Similar rides have happened in more than 70 cities worldwide since 2004. Sunday's event was Philadelphia's first.
