A Port Richmond woman says she saw the driver stop in front of her Janney Street home and toss kittens out the back door of the bus, reported Fox 29's Sharon Crowley.
Terri Gerretz and her daughter say they rushed out to stop him. She called the SPCA who rescued the kittens.
“She stated there was an audible thud when each cat hit the ground,” says Gregory Jordan of the PSPCA. "The bottom is, it's cruel. You don't have to be educated to know if you drop a cat from several feet that you can injure the cat."
Neighbors say the driver did not offer any excuses for his actions.
“He didn't even care. All he was worried about was getting to his next job,” says Gerretz.
Animal control officers tell Fox 29 the bus driver will be cited for animal cruelty when he is located.
"I think it's disgusting and I think he really should be liable and locked up for that," says another resident. "Because if it weren't for them, those kittens could've died."
Vets at the SPCA say the kittens were covered in fleas and appear to be malnourished. They are being treated at the shelter.
It is not yet known what school the accused bus driver works for. The vehicle was empty at the time of the incident.
Officers say the quick-thinking neighbors wrote down the license plate number.
