SugarHouse To Break Ground Amid Protest

PHILADELPHIA - After years of delays and protests, the SugarHouse Casino breaks ground in Fishtown on Thursday.

Mayor Michael Nutter and other elected officials are expected to attend the groundbreaking ceremony, which starts at 3 p.m. and is not open to the public.

During Thursday's ceremony, casino opponents plan to hold a demonstration at the casino construction site.

The event organized by Casino-Free Philadelphia begins at 2 p.m. at the intersection of Frankford and Delaware avenues, and the protest is open to the public.

About a dozen protesters were arrested just last week for blocking the gates into the site.
