PHILADELPHIA - Just hours after the official groundbreaking for the SugarHouse Casino in Fishtown, vandals have struck.
Police said the vandals did about $5,000 in damage to construction equipment at the site along Columbus Boulevard overnight Thursday.
Oil lines on the equipment were cut. SkyFox over the scene Friday morning showed some of the damaged equipment and materials down, apparently to soak up the leaking oil.
SugarHouse officials called the vandalism "disappointing" and said they are fully cooperating with police.
This is the third time vandals have struck the site in the past year, reported Fox 29's Dave Schratwieser.
Casino-Free Philadelphia issued a statement Friday afternoon condemning the vandalism and denying an involvement in this incident.
"We were not involved with this incident in any way. While we have always advocated for the voice of the people to be heard through legal, democratic means of expression,we are a group that practices nonviolence and we have never, nor will we ever, damage property and we condemn anyone who does."
Investigators are looking for the people responsible.
