Barge Takes Out Jersey Shore Bridge

The Townsends Inlet Bridge in Cape May County has been closed after it was struck by a barge.

The bridge between Sea Isle City and Avalon was hit by the barge on Wednesday after it broke loose from its moorings and got stuck under the bridge for nearly an hour.

Crews can’t look at the bridge because of the bad weather at the shore.

A section of sidewalk was also damaged in the accident.

The bridge was built in 1939 and handles about 4,000 cars daily.
