A 425-foot, 80-year-old smokestack slowly came crashing down near 30th Street Station on Sunday morning.
Dynamite brought down the structure just before 8 a.m.
The smokestack was built by the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1929. Amtrak bought the property in 1971 but says it never used the smokestack. It was starting to crumble and become a safety hazard, so they decided it had to go.
A safety zone was set up around the chimney, and air quality experts were on the scene.
A steam plant and an adjacent building will be demolished by the end of the year.
If the smokestack looks familiar to you, that's because it was in the news not very long ago. Earlier this month, an elaborate electronic love note which read "I love you, Sonia" was found at the base of the smokestack.
The device was harmless. Some may call it cute, but the bomb and counter terrorism experts called to the scene didn't find it funny. There's still no word on who put it there.
