PHILADELPHIA - Jurors choosing between first- and second-degree murder charges for a man who admitted to killing a Philadelphia police officer have watched surveillance tape of the fatal shooting.
A jury on Monday watched six seconds of video from a North Philadelphia doughnut shop that shows 23-year-old John Lewis shooting Officer Chuck Cassidy in the head on Oct. 21, 2007.
Four store workers also testified.
Lewis pleaded guilty to a general charge of murder last week. Now jurors must decide whether he committed first- or second-degree murder. If convicted of first-degree murder, Lewis would face either life in prison without parole or the death penalty.
The 54-year-old policeman was shot while making a routine check on the store, at Broad Street and 66th Avenue, which had been a frequent target for robberies. He died the next day.
