CHELTENHAM, Pa. - Police are looking for the hit-and-run driver who struck and killed an elderly woman walking home from the library Monday afternoon in Montgomery County.
Frances Gordon, 75, of Elkins Park, was hit around 5 p.m. while crossing at Old York and Church roads after leaving the local library for home.
During a Tuesday afternoon news conference, the Cheltenham Township Police Department said witnesses will be important in solving this case, Fox 29's Dave Schratwieser said.
Police Chief John J. Norris said it was dark, raining and traffic was heavy at the time Gordon was struck, but the driver knew something had happened.
"After striking the victim, the driver got out of his vehicle, looked around and then fled in the van eastbound on Church Road," Norris said. "Two other vehicles were behind the van and also passed the victim. They also stopped behind the van when he stopped. We are asking these operators to please contact the Cheltenham Police Department with any information they may be able to provide."
Police said one witness described the striking vehicle as a newer, white or light-gray utility or work van with a ladder on the top and two tinted windows in the rear. They do not have a make or model, and no debris from the vehicle was left at the scene. The driver was described as a white male in his late 40s up to 50-years-old, clean-shaven with short hair.
Police asked anyone with information to call them at 215-885-1600 ext. 476 or 450, or tips can be left anonymously at www.cheltenhamtownship.org.
