Police were called to the Marriot Residence Inn on Island Avenue around 1 a.m. Thursday.
“They find the decedent, a Tyree West, a 28-year-old male, found shot one time in the chest, right outside of one of the hotel rooms,” said Homicide Unit Captain James Clark.
Detectives say they found West at the rear of the hotel with the trunk of his car open. They believe he and a female friend came to the Residence Inn Wednesday evening and made arrangements for a second man to join them for sex.
“We believe there was some type of encounter between the three that may have some type of sexual nexus to it,” said Clark.
Clark says the third man left the hotel after having sex with the woman, then returned and things turned violent.
“It’s not really clear on what went on. We believe it was some type of meet between the three of them and ultimately, some type of robbery that went bad."
West died at the scene.
Police have questioned the woman and a possible suspect. No warrant has been issued for an arrest.
The investigation is ongoing.
Police recovered a weapon at the scene and also the suspected getaway car in the slaying. Murder charges could be filed soon.
