Mob Underboss Charged In Police Assault

MARGATE, N.J. - Only On Fox: The reputed underboss of the Philadelphia mob is in trouble at the Jersey Shore.

It started with a disorderly conduct charge in the early morning hours back on September 1 and ended with an arrest for aggravated assault on a police officer, reported Fox 29's Dave Schratwieser.

Margate Police tell Fox 29 news that Marty Angelina, the mob's Number 2 man in Philadelphia, is now free on bail for disorderly conduct and allegedly assaulting a Margate police officer.

This all happened after Angelina was arrested for disorderly conduct outside a Margate apartment on Coolidge Avenue at 6 a.m.

Police say he was intoxicated, placed in handcuffs and taken to Margate police headquarters.

After being processed, police say he became belligerent with a Margate officer at police headquarters and at one point spit in the officer's face.

In New Jersey, that is considered an aggravated assault because bodily fluids were exchanged. Angelina was then arrested a second time and charged.

Mob expert and Philadelphia Inquirer reporter George Anastasia weighed in on this arrest.

“I don't know if it's his lifestyle or the way he operates, what he does," said Anastasia. "He's rather aggressive. He's got a reputation of being something of a leg buster. That's what he was with Joey Merlino. he went after a bookmaker with a baseball bat one time,”

Angelina was eventually released on $2,500 bail. He's due in court September 14 on the disorderly conduct charge.

Angelina has had problems before. He had a well-documented encounter with FBI agents during the arrest of mob boss Joey Merlino in 1999.

He served six and half years on racketeering charges and then was sent back to jail twice for violating conditions of his parole.
