Review Board President Calls Out Rigali

Board Meader Has Harsh Words For Cardinal In Print

PHILADELPHIA - Cardinal Justin Rigali is taking a lot of heat from the head of the Philadelphia Archdiocese review board.

He's being slammed over his handling of the child sex abuse scandal during his tenure.

Ana Maria Catanzaro, the president of the review board, wrote a scathing magazine article that pulls no punches.

She really came down hard on the cardinal, saying he "failed miserably" and was "not open and transparent," while a grand jury strongly criticized her board.

Catanzaro joined the Fox 29 News at 10 on Sunday night to discuss the matter and answer whether she shouldn't be held accountable.

Catanzaro also talked about how much responsibility should be borne by the man who appointed her to the board, Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, what steps did the board took after the 2005 grand jury report to better investigate claims of abuse in the church, and why she's speaking out now.

Fox 29 News also reached out to Archdiocesan officials, who issued a statement that reads in part: "The Archdiocese of Philadelphia's understanding of the best methods for investigating and taking action on reported allegations of sexual abuse, especially those that civil authorities do not pursue, has continually changed over the years. Despite all the work that has been done, there is clearly much more to do. Our focus over the past several months has been on taking the necessary action steps to improve that process from beginning to end."
