Officer Injured In Center City Crash

PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia police officer was rushed to the hospital following an accident in Center City Tuesday night.

An officer was headed to a backup call and driving north on 7th Street when her police cruiser was hit struck on its side by a Volkswagen Passat headed east on Market Street.

Witnesses said the officer was flying down Market Street without lights activated and went through a red light. They also said lights only came on after the accident.

The officer was transported to Jefferson University Hospital following the crash at 7th and Market.

The Volkswagen was driven by an 18-year-old female. There were three other passengers in her car (all 17 or 18 y/o). All of the passengers were transported to Jefferson for observation.

The police officer was taken to Jefferson with non-life threatening injuries. Police later said she suffered a broken leg and pelvis.

Rescue crews used the jaws of life to extricate officer from the vehicle before being transported to the hospital.
