PHILADELPHIA - A spokesman for a federal prison in Ashland, Ky., confirmed Monday morning that former Pennsylvania state Sen. Vince Fumo is now in custody.
The disgraced 66-year-old South Philadelphia lawmaker walked into the low-security prison at 9:20 a.m. wearing a white T-shirt and blue jeans.
He's expected to serve about 4 1/2 years for defrauding two non-profits and the senate out of millions of dollars. He was convicted on 137 counts.
Fumo's lawyers had asked a federal appeals court to allow their client to remain free while appealing his conviction. They also argued the Kentucky facility is too far away for Fumo's friends and family to visit him.
Ashland is about 400 miles from Philadelphia.
So far, there have been no rulings in either argument.
News crews had been staked out at Fumo's Philadelphia home all weekend but there were no sightings of him there, Fox 29's Nefertiti Jaquez reported.
Co-defendant Ruth Arnao, a long-time Fumo aide, is also set to start a one-year prison term Monday.
