DRPA Toll Hikes Set For Friday

Prices are going up $1at the toll booth, if you cross one of four Delaware River bridges to get to or from work, or if you're heading down the shore from Pennsylvania this weekend.

The question is why? And, what's it going to get us?

John Matheussen, the CEO of the Delaware River Port Authority, says the money is needed for repairs.

"Literally we're jacking up the [Ben Franklin] Bridge, the entire part of the bridge, taking out some barings that have to be replaced and putting new ones in. That's a process that takes many many months to do."

That work alone is costing about $26 million.

Farther south, the Walt Whitman is getting even more work done, costing almost $200 million.

The Problem is the DRPA hasn't exactly earned the public's trust, so commuters aren't thrilled to hear prices are going up the toll booth, and 10 percent on Patco trains.

The DRPA says about 40 percent of the increase will go to pay off debt, and the rest of it will help maintain and rehab the bridges and rail cars.
