Man Freed After 35 Years Tastes Freedom

Freed 35 years after being convicted of a crime he didn't commit, now the family of James Bain says they never stopped believing his innocence.

During those three-and-a-half decades, Bain insisted he was not the man who kidnapped and raped a 9-year-old boy in Florida. He pleaded for a DNA test several times, but no one would listen until The Innocence Project took up his cause.

Bain finally walked free last month.

"I'm going to see my mom, the one I just got off the phone to. That's the most important thing in my life at this moment," he said at the time.

Bain's brother, Mark, watched from his job at Muhlenberg College in Allentown as his brother was released. It was a moment he says he always knew would happen, even as his brother languished year after year in a prison cell.

"I was happy, seeing him out for something he didn't do – made me feel good," Mark Bain said. "Then, I told the people he was my brother. They didn't want to believe me. I showed a guy my ID just to prove it was my brother."

James Bain was 19-years-old when police arrested him. The girl he was dating at the time went on to marry and have kids with someone else.

But she's divorced now and they're dating once again.

Mark Bain said his brother is just trying to pick up with life right where he left off.
