Mayfair Crime Camera Not Popular

A police camera installed at a popular Northeast Philadelphia intersection has some people upset.

The Philadelphia Police installed the surveillance camera for use at Frankford and Cottman for during the Phillies playoffs.

The original plan was for that camera with the blue blinking lights to come down soon thereafter.

Philadelphia police decided to keep it up there.

Some residents say that is fine but others want it taken town now.

More than four months later the camera is still up and running and watching.

Mayfair resident Donnie Smith says this wasn't the original plan, that the city and the police department, claim that the camera would be removed, sometime after the World Series.

The police department decided to keep the camera up. Mayfair town watch president John Vearling thinks it is the right decision.

On the other hand Smith thinks the camera's flashing blue light that sends a message that Mayfair is a high crime area

“I'd like to shine a positive light on Mayfair,” Smith said.

The town watch president thinks the cameras an excellent deterrent when it comes to speeding drivers.

We tried to contact the Philadelphia police department, but they were unable to provide any comment for the story as of today,

One common area that people were at least able to talk about was the issue of blue light.

They may differ on what the camera does but they want the blue light toned down so that it is less obvious.
