A tearful mother charged with trying to sell her baby tells Fox 29 her side of the story, after she's accused of taking $15,000 for her infant.

Police in Delaware say Bridget Wismer made a deal to sell her newborn baby to a Philadelphia man.

Fox 29's Claudia Gomez spoke to that mom, who says the incident is a tragic misunderstanding.

On Tuesday morning, New Castle County police said Wismer, 33, of Brookside Park, Del, and 54-year-old John Gavaghan of Philadelphia agreed to the sale and purchase of Wismer’s newborn son for $15,000.

Wismer clearly appeared heartbroken when she spoke with Fox 29.

"I love my kid as much as anybody could love their kid," Wismer said.

Her newborn baby boy is now with a foster family in Delaware. And she's facing felony charges. So is her friend John Gavaghan, who she calls Jack.

Police say Wismer agreed to sell Jack Gavaghan her baby for 15-thousand dollars.

"It never would have happened. I would never have had the baby. I have two children that I've raised. This is devastating for them too, because they haven't seen their baby brother."

Wismer and her other two sons live with her mother in Newark. She says when she got pregnant unexpectedly, and she went to a clinic to have an abortion.

"I couldn't go through with the abortion. I couldn't just give my baby away. I gave him to a friend who I knew was going to be in his life every day," Wismer said.

That friend was Jack Gavaghan. He didn't answer his door when we went knocking. Wismer admitted Gavaghan did give her money, but she insists it was not as payment for the baby.

"We were both doing this together. We were going to doctor's appointments together every day. There was nothing that wasn't together. The thing was he was giving me money and helping me with my other kids," Wismer said.

"I didn't do anything wrong. I didn't do anything wrong. There was nothing that was hidden, everything was out in the open," Wismer said.

Wismer is unemployed, a single mother, and already supporting two kids. And she's living with her mother.

Wismer told us her mother refused to put up the new baby also, and so she says she had no choice but to try to make it work with Jack Gavaghan.

That way, she could still be a part of the baby's life.

Both Wismer and Gavaghan were released on bond in the case.
