Officer Hurt By Shoplifting Suspect

PHILADELPHIA - A Philadelphia police was injured in South Philadelphia during an altercation in a drug store.

At approximately 6pm Tuesday evening, Lt. Douglas Stanford of the 1st district responded to a shoplifting call at the Rite Aide on 15th and Moyamensing

Lt. Stanford and the suspect got into an altercation.   No weapons were involved.  The suspect then fled on a bike.  Lt. Stanford was transported to HUP with two broken ribs and a punctured lung. He is currently listed in stable condition.

The suspect is described as a black male, 5’11” to 6’1”, 200 lbs and between the ages of 30 and 40. He was wearing black sneakers, black and white shorts and a striped shirt and baseball cap.

At this time, the police are still searching for the suspect.

Surveillance video from inside the store will be reviewed.

Lt. Stanford has been with the force for 29 years.
