TURNERSVILLE, N.J. - Oil Spills Into New Jersey Lake
Tens of thousands of diesel fuel spilled in one New Jersey community on Thursday, sending crews scrambling to clean and contain the mess.
For hours, homeowners were left to wonder what was going on.
Some told Fox 29 they could smell and see the substance in a local lake, but had no idea what happened.
At least 26,000 gallons have gushed into the area, including into Big Timber Creek, Greenloch Lake and Blackwood Lake.
The incident started Thursday morning near the New Jersey Transit Station in Turnersville, in Gloucester County, where fuel leaked from two underground tanks.
The leak has been contained.
Health officials say there is no danger to the public due to the leak.
Fox 29 spoke to one witness who said the lake was full of geese at the time of the oil spill, and they're now covered in oil.
