PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia school district is dealing with funding problems of its own. The district has until June to close a $61million dollar budget gap.
To try and make it up, the district will begin closing buildings one hour early at 8 p.m. and closing schools completely on the weekends. Those changes go into effect this Saturday and should save the district about $2.8 million.
But parents fear saving money will come at the expense of student safety.
Veronica Joyner of Parents United for Better Schools is like many Philadelphia parents that are scared, now that district officials have decided to close the buildings early on week days and all together on weekends.
The move will save money, but it will put kids on the streets instead of in activities that keep them out of trouble.
Parents are wondering who will keep the schools safe since the district has also cut more than 90 police officers -- 90 more reasons parents are losing faith in the district's ability to protect their kids.
Mayor Michael Nutter wants the district to reconsider.
