PHILADELPHIA - The Phillies said it will now be up to team security to catch unruly fans who run onto the field at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies said they made the decision after discussions with the police department.
This policy change comes two days after police Tasered a 17-year-old fan.
Now, team security will grab the runners and then hand them over to police, although they will call for the assistance of police officers at the park if greater force is necessary.
The Tasered teen released a statement through his lawyer apologizing to the team and the community.
Meanwhile, Thomas Betz – the copycat fan who ran out onto the field Tuesday night during the ninth inning of Cole Hamels' gem – was released from jail Wednesday night.
Betz said he ran out onto the field to prove a point, that you don't need to use a Taser to calm down a fan.
Of course, in addition to trespass and related charges, the Warminster man faces a drug count for possession of marijuana, as well.
Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice Seamus McCaffery weighed in on the issued Wednesday night on the Fox 29 News at 10.
McCaffrey said the officer did exactly what he was trained to do.
McCaffery also said he doesn't think we need a "Phillies Court," like he used to hold below Veterans Stadium during Eagles games, but there needs to be tougher penalties for unruly fans.
