Police Shoot Man After Chase, Struggle

Man, 22, Listed In Critical But Stable Condition

PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia police said an officer shot a man Friday night in Wynnefield.

According to police, the 22-year-old man was wounded after a foot and vehicle chase that originated in a known drug area.

Police said two officers in a car pulled up to the area and saw one person run away. After a two-block chase, one officer in a car and one running after the man caught him on the 5300 block of Montgomery Avenue.

"Upon them catching up to the male, they notice he has a weapon in his hands," police Chief Inspector Scott Small said. "One of the officers yells to the partner, 'Gun.' They struggle with the man, take him to the ground, and the male points the weapon at the officers. One officer fires his weapon three times, striking the suspect three times."

Four evidence markers later dotted the asphalt on Montgomery Avenue: three for the bullet casings and one for the suspect's gun.

"We've recovered from the male a loaded, 9mm, semi-automatic handgun," Small said.

The man was taken to University of Pennsylvania Hospital in critical but stable condition and expected to survive, police said.

The officers involved in the shooting will be on desk duty as internal affairs investigates, which is standard when any police weapon discharge occurs.
