PHILADELPHIA - One teenager was shot on a school bus Friday morning in West Philadelphia and another teen is behind bars.
The shooting happened at 57th and Pine streets shortly after 8 a.m.
According to police, a 15-year-old student got into an argument with a 17-year-old and shot him in the back of the yellow school bus.
The bullet grazed the victim on the ear. He was hospitalized in stable condition.
Police said they arrested the suspect soon afterward at 61st Street and Cedar Avenue.
Fox 29 News cameras were there later as the teen was taken inside Southwest Detectives for questioning.
School district spokesman Fernando Gallard said 11 other students on bus were not injured. All of them are students at the CEP Miller school.
The bus driver said, "All the kids on my bus kept telling me, 'Open the door.'"
The 15-year-old suspect then allegedly told the driver to stop so he could get off and run.
"The gun was behind my head," the driver said, holding a finger to the back of his head to demonstrate.
"I'm still in shock," said Kia Woodbridge, whose son, Nigel Porter, was on the school bus when the gunshots rang out. "He made it off the bus, so thank Jesus it wasn't my son, that's all."
Her son was shaken up after leaving the Southwest Detectives after talking to police about what happened: "I just saw somebody got shot."
The horrifying incident was troubling to everyone, especially police, Fox 29's Shawnette Wilson reported.
"The ease of these kids are able to get guns, it's something that troubles us across the city on a regular basis," Deputy Commissioner Kevin Bethel said.
Police also said that when they arrested the 15-year-old suspect they recovered a .25-caliber handgun they believe he used in the shooting, and he will likely be charged as an adult.
