Three Upper Darby Children Hit By Car

Charges Expected Soon Against Driver

UPPER DARBY, Pa. - Three students in Upper Darby, Pa., were hit as they crossed an intersection by a driver who then fled the scene on Tuesday afternoon, say police.

The incident happened at 1:24 p.m. as the students left Beverly Hills Middle School after classes were dismissed early.

Two of the boys are 12 and the other is 13.

The most seriously injured is 12-year-old Jamel Brunswick. The 7th grade student was upgraded from extremely critical to critical but stable condition hours after the accident.

The two other victims are listed in serious condition at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood says two boys were standing at a curb waiting to cross a street. He says that's when a 42-year-old woman swerved to avoid a traffic jam, went across three lanes of traffic, hit the two boys with her car, then kept going. He says she hit a third boy about 15 yards down the street.

"It was crazy 'cause she was just like, going really fast and hit them out of nowhere," recalls witness Victoria Olds.

The driver of the vehicle reportedly took off from the accident scene and hit another car, injuring the driver in that car, as well.

She then allegedly jumped out of her car and tried to flee the scene.

Upper Darby police were able to apprehend her.

"Obviously, it was reckless and certainly, she tried to get away, it was felonious. So she's locked up right now," Chitwood said at the scene.

Friends and neighbors are praying Brunswick pulls through.

"He's always been polite and respectful and always "Hi, Mr. Ray' and you can tell he's a well brought-up kid...Always a smile, always a nice thing to say," says neighbor Ray Sargent.

Police are running a blood test on the suspect to see if she was under the influence. She faces criminal charges.
