Victims Speak About Taxi Cab Beating

PHILADELPHIA - A crowded Center City and a senseless attack on a cab driver and his passenger. So, why didn't anyone jump in and do anything about it? The attack happened Saturday night at 15th and Chestnut streets, just a block from City Hall, a couple of blocks away from Liberty Place.

That taxi cab was stopped at one of the busiest intersections in the city. Both the cabbie and the passenger were beaten by a group of teenagers and it happened in front of dozens of onlookers.

On Monday night, both victims spoke out.

Riding down Chestnut in the back of a cab on his way to a dinner date, University of Pennsylvania student Brian Goldman says the attack happened in an instant. Goldman and the cab driver got out of the cab and both were punched again.

The cab driver, who did not want to be identified, grabbed a tire iron before the teens took off. Soon after, police arrested two 17-year-olds and a 15-year-old.

What disturbs Goldman almost more than the attack? He says the whole ordeal was witnessed by more than a dozen people who did nothing.

Goldman didn't stick around, either. In fact, he never even called police. He didn't know a crime was reported until after he wrote a column about the ordeal for the student newspaper.
