Authorities say Mays was pronounced dead Sunday morning after being found by his wife at home. There were no signs of a break-in, and investigators do not suspect foul play.
Mays was on a plane that blew a tire upon landing at Tampa International Airport on Saturday. There has been no official connection between an injury Mays may have received on that flight and his passing.
He told FOX 13 in Tamps that he suffered a bump on the head during the rough landing.
Mays was aboard US Airways Flight 1241 flying from Philadelphia, which landed roughly when the front tire blew out as it touched down. After the flight, Billy told FOX 13:
"All of a sudden as we hit you know it was just the hardest hit, all the things from the ceiling started dropping. It hit me on the head, but I got a hard head."
Mays had been in the Philadelphia area doing a new OxiClean commercial.
Mays posted about the landing last on his Twitter last night, saying, "Just had a close call landing in Tampa. The tires blew out upon landing. Stuck in the plane on the runway. You can always count on US Air."
Mays grew up in Pennsylvania and got his start as a salesman on the Atlantic City boardwalk.
There was no immediate word of a memorial service for Mays. His wife Deborah asked for privacy in a statement issued through police.
"Although Billy lived a public life, we don't anticipate making any public statements over the next couple of days. Our family asks that you respect our privacy during these difficult times," she said.
Mays was also featured on the reality TV show "Pitchmen" on the Discovery Channel, which followed Mays and Anthony Sullivan in their marketing jobs.
