Phillies Fan Tasered On Field By Cops

Teen Charged; Police Reviewing Tapes

PHILADELPHIA - A 17-year-old Philadelphia Phillies fan was tasered after running onto the field last night during the Phillies-Cardinals game.

Philadelphia police are reviewing the case to see if it was an appropriate use of force.

The incident occurred late in the game at Citizens Bank Park as the Phillies were in the field and the Cardinals were preparing to bat.

The teen, wearing a red Phillies National League Champions T-shirt and khaki shorts, was running around the outfield waving a white towel and eluding security.

A uniformed police officer pointed the taser at him, fired and didn't miss, taking the teen down face-first.

Several Phillies players were then shown hiding their faces in their gloves, maybe laughing behind them or keeping commentary from potential lip-readers.

As the scene played out on the field, it did not play out instantly on live television, which cut away from showing it.

But with 40,000 eyewitnesses and many of them with videocameras, it was put right on YouTube as soon as fans got home. And reporters covering the game got comments right away from the Phillies and police.

Philadelphia police Lt. Frank Vanore said the department's Internal Affairs Bureau will examine if this was "proper use of the equipment," meaning the Taser.

And Phillies spokeswoman Bonnie Clark said they'll be talking to the police to determine whether it was appropriate to Taser the fan.

The teen -- who has not been named publicly by police because of his age -- is being charged with criminal trespassing and other offenses.
