Pa. Mulls Closing 35 State Parks

State Also Lost $133M On Investment Deal Collapsed

The head of Pennsylvania's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources says because of the state's budget shortfall at least 35 state parks will have to close.

The agency is also suggesting closing one-thousand miles of state forest roads -- limiting access for hunters and fishermen.

The proposal would cut 19-million dollars from the budget.

That news comes amid word that Pennsylvania's already cash-strapped government has taken another hit.

The treasury department says the state lost $133 million last year when an investment deal with Mellon Bank collapsed.

The largest losses were felt by the teachers' retirement system and state employees' pension fund.

Several other state funded agencies also saw significant losses.
