Sunday Meeting Fails To Secure Budget

A closed-door session Sunday between Gov. Ed Rendell and legislative leaders did little to secure a budget deal.

Lawmakers said they're working to address Rendell's doubts about the accuracy of revenue estimates and looking for other ways to get his support. It could take up to a week for the bills making up the budget bill to be passed.

Meanwhile, state lawmakers will vote on the Philly bailout plan, House Bill 1828, by Tuesday at the earliest. As long as the plan is approved by Friday the city will take up budget Plan "B," avoiding mass city layoffs, including police officers and firefighters. The city will also keep most libraries and recreation centers open.
