PHILADELPHIA - Chicago-area prosecutors are accusing a program at Northwestern University of paying a witness in a murder case.
Journalism students in the school's Innocence Project were trying to free Anthony McKinney. They believe he was wrongly convicted of murder 31 years ago.
Prosecutors are questioning the credibility of their evidence. Investigators say one witness, named Tony Drake, was paid $40 for an interview.
At a press conference Tuesday, the director of the school's Innocence Project said the only money exchanged was to cover cab fare.
He also said if his students had done this kind of reporting or investigating, he would've given them an 'F'.
The issues raised by that case are being followed closely right here in our area by the Pennsylvania Innocence Project.
Legal director Marissa Bluestine discussed the matter with Fox 29’s Kerri-Lee Halkett.
